Attention Omaha Tribal Members:
We’ve recently identified a case of Hypoxylon canker on a downed tree within our community. This fungal disease affects weakened hardwood trees—especially oak, elm, and aspen—and can cause serious internal rot, bark loss, and eventual tree death.
🛑 What to look for:
-
Bark peeling or falling off
-
Cracked or discolored wood inside
-
Dieback in limbs or thinning leaves
We are working to remove the infected trees around the powwow grounds. Omaha Tribe Construction Director Kenny Appleton says, “After the powwow, we’ll replant three or four trees for each tree that we take down. We’ll have new growth that’s going to take off in the next five to ten years.”
We appreciate your help in keeping our environment healthy and safe.
