We are pleased to announce today that current board of directors member, Summer Copeland, has been elected President by the Genoa U.S. Indian School Foundation Board at the January 5th, 2026, election.
“This election marks a historic milestone for the foundation as well as Native peoples in assuming this leadership role, fostering a deeper connection between the foundation and the communities we serve. I firmly believe this is a vital bridge for healing, truth-telling, reclaiming our shared history, and honoring the victims of past injustices. Through our reconciliation efforts—such as digitizing historical records, aiding in locating lost burial sites, and repatriating artifacts to affected communities—we confront the traumatic legacy of forced assimilation and abuse at the school. This connection ensures Native voices shape the narrative, providing closure to families, and educating future generations about this painful chapter in history.”
